{Live} Jane’s New Pet

We’ve had several fish over the past year: goldfish, neon tetras, feeders. Somehow none of them have ever lasted more than a few days.
Now whenever Jane sees a fish, she says, “Mommy, is that fish going to die?“*
Lately, I’ve found myself promising to get her a rabbit, since I figure it’s easier to take care of than a cat or dog and cuter than a gerbil or hamster.
But in the meantime, Jane trapped a spider!
Charlotte has been with us for several days now and is still going strong.
Can’t say the same for her babies.
*Yes, we’re a family that has introduced the concept of death to our children since the get go. And we don’t gloss over it. As in, “Lie down while you’re eating and choke and die,” or “The car will hit you and you will die,” and on many unfortunate occasions, “The fish is dead.”

Are those real spider eggs? I’ve never seen any real ones! Awesome! We’re big on catch and release- In Laredo, especially during the summer when it’s so hot, the critters make their way into our home- tarantulas, scorpions, centipedes, millipedes. They come in through those intentional holes in the brick to allow for swelling or whatever happens in the summertime heat. My friends think I’m nuts, but if they survive the glue traps, I tend to release them by spraying Pam on their legs and we keep them in a travel cage for a day or so for observation. Then, we release them. I’m not sure if they carry any kind of disease (like many turtles and reptiles that carry salmonella)- so I don’t let the kids handle anything we catch. One of the main reasons we introduced pets into the household was to introduce the concept of death. And, we are honest, too. See that door hinge? It’ll cut all your fingers off. Don’t touch it.

Yep, they are. I was hoping they would hatch, but (Jane’s) curiosity got the best of them. Cool looking, eh? I think I would freak out if all of those critters made it into our home. The spider was enough for me. Thanks for the Pam tip
And yes, the scare tactic works. I think it’ll be effective in the pre-teen years when you’ll need to scare them silly during “the talk,” too. Sorry, I couldn’t read the eulogy because I got the heebie-jeebies just looking at the photos and had to “x” out of the window! ha ha
