In my spare time - which would be between 2:00 a.m. and 4:00 a.m. when I’ve finished giving one another bottle and I’m in the interminable insomnia zone before it’s time to get up again to change the other one’s soaked bedsheets - I ponder. I ponder about what I’m going to blog about next. I ponder when I’m going to start riding the brand new bike my husband gifted me five years ago. I ponder how much that pristine bike could fetch if I sold it and whether I could buy new shoes with that money. I ponder all sorts of things.

A recurring thought these days is “What makes a happy family?”

I just quit my job to devote more time to our family’s wellness, but what does that mean? Am I going to organize a zillion playdates and exciting outings for the kids? Am I going to master a mean casserole and have dinner on the table every evening at six o’clock? Are Hubby and I going to go on more dates and will the family take more vacations?

My sleep-deprived brain came up with this easy-to-remember alliterative equation:

Food + Fun + Fitness + Family Time = One Happy Family

Food

A full family is a happy family. A family full with healthful foods (like our Easy Frozen Berry Smoothie) - even better.

Fun

Cough syrup works, but laughter is the best medicine of all.

Fitness

The family that plays together (yes, miracles do happen), stays happy together.

Family Time

Take the time to spend quality time. With your spouse, for yourself and with your kids. (Running around doing errands or laundry or driving from birthday party to birthday party doesn’t count).

We don’t always follow “The Four R’s” to a tee, but we’re working on it! What works for you and your family?
