You know the famous saying “think smarter, not harder.” Well, why is it so darn hard to think smart sometimes?
For me, it’s being a creature of habit. Even if my particular habit is the equivalent of walking uphill both ways, I’ll blindly stick to it unless someone knocks me over the head with a new suggestion. In the area of wasting time, I’m especially guilty of following my too long routines just because I’m used to them.
Instead of any noggin knockin’, here’s a simple cheat sheet full of time-savers I’ve come up with that just might help you out of your time-wasting rut:
Meals
- Plan your meals out a week in advance. If that sounds too complicated, then when you’re cooking tonight’s spaghetti, just make a huge batch of the sauce and freeze the extra. Do that every night. You can use these awesome containers my friend just introduced me to!
- Invest in a crockpot and use these delicious recipes.
- If all else fails, call for takeout while you’re still out for a place on your route home.
Getting Out The Door
- Do everything the night before: lay out your and the kids’ clothes; pack the diaper bag or your child’s backpack and put it in the car; make and pack all snacks, lunches, bottles and sippy cups.
- Plan a simple breakfast (like bagels & cream cheese or toast & string cheese) and set the table - or put it into storage containers to eat on the go - the night before.
- If your kids are still in car seats, put their socks and shoes in the car the night before. When they’re all strapped in in the morning you can put on their shoes without fighting wriggly feet.
Beauty & Style
- Buy clothes in multiples. If something works - for you or your kids - you’ll always grab for it. Avoid the inevitable: reaching for it in the morning rush only to find it’s stained with baby food or waiting in the washer when you really need it.
- Use a foundation or tinted moisturizer with built-in SPF to knock out one extra step in your morning routine.
- Don’t wash and blow dry your hair every day (especially if the only people that are going to see it are less than 3 feet tall). Grab your flat iron, throw up a ponytail or rely on a headband and sunglasses.
Exercise
- Enroll your child in a school with an on-site gym or at least one that’s nearby.
- Walk to the park instead of driving.
- Do double-duty while comforting your crying baby by doing squats and lunges with her in a baby wearing device.
What are some of your favorite time-saving tips? I’d love to hear them since I’m always in need of more!
