How many wine-drinking girlfriends does it take to figure out how to pay the bill at dinner?

Well, usually it takes everyone at the table, at least two iPhone calculators, and a few run throughs before we get it right.

One time I gave the waitress a 200 percent tip. Don’t even ask.

Last week, using Serve for a dinner out with girlfriends at our favorite restaurant, it thankfully was much easier!

Serve claims that you can easily send money via e-mail from either your computer or mobile device. Instead of breaking out the phones to calculate who owes what at the end of the night, you can just have one person pay and instantly pay that person back using the Serve mobile app or by sending her an e-mail.

I can definitely attest to the easy part with respect to signing up and sending money in a snap, but if you have mom-brain, or are overworked or underslept - or drink too much wine with your dinner - you may have still have some issues divvying up your bill at the end of the night that have nothing to do with Serve.

The cutest guest in our party of six.

For example, three of us had trouble even before the night of the dinner because we forgot our passwords just after signing up but before linking our debit accounts and were locked out of our Serve accounts after too many login attempts.

Then, after dinner, when we split the bill evenly between everyone except me and I attempted to pay them all back through the Serve mobile app using my $250 Serve credit, I couldn’t remember my password and got locked out of my account. Just so you know, if your account is locked, your card is locked, too, so you can’t use it. How would I know this if my friends split the dinner and I didn’t pay? After a few glasses of wine, I forgot that I wasn’t supposed to be paying, but paying everyone back instead, and attempted to pay with my locked Serve card.

Not being able to use the mobile app wasn’t a problem since I called customer service from the restaurant and they unlocked my account right away. Once I got home, I chose a new password - and wrote it down this time! - then simply entered my friends’ e-mail addresses into a form on Serve’s website and paid them back for dinner in less than 30 seconds. (I could have done that through the mobile app, but was afraid that typing tipsy on a teeny keyboard would have risked another lockout!)

As you can see, if you’re a fully functioning adult, you will have no problems with this easy, awesome new service. But if you’re suffering from mom-brain, not to worry: one of the coolest things about Serve is the ridiculously excellent customer service. Based on my overly extensive experience with the Serve customer service reps, I can honestly say that you can get through to a person pretty quickly, they’re super-friendly, and they can actually fix your snafus on the spot.

Next time, I think it would be awesome to use my Serve card to pay for dinner and have everyone pay me back instantly so we won’t have to worry about divvying up the bill at all. No calculators, no confusion.
