{Play} Valentine’s Day Art, Craft & Activity Ideas For Kids
February 7, 2012 in All Posts, Celebrate, Play, Toddler Activities
I never said I wouldn’t post more Valentine’s ideas…just that I thought you might be sick of them! I’ve given you a few, like our
- Valentine’s Day Lacing Hearts Activity
- Valentine’s Day Stained Glass Heart Cookies
- Valentine’s Day Jar of Hearts and
- Valentine’s Day Jello Play
but here’s one more - not necessarily the last!
Heart Attack
I got this idea from who Liz of Made On Maple, who guest blogged at Toddler Approved during their 100 Acts of Kindness Project (still going on, by the way!). Our version was Salt Dough Heart Ornaments in a paper bag painted with hearts.
First, we made Salt Dough Hearts using the same recipe we used for our Salt Dough Handprints, only this time we used white flour instead of wheat flour and regular salt instead of coarse salt. This made for whiter, smoother, prettier salt dough pieces.
I punched holes in some of them to try a little lacing with baker’s twine and ribbon.
Jane shouldn’t get all the fun! (Although, if I had made the holes slightly larger, she would have been able to lace these salt dough ornaments, too).
But, she was more than happy to paint these little beauties.
And she had some fun of her own with the leftover salt dough.
I love when we do a project together and we get to compare our creative outcomes side by side:
Says a lot either about our age difference or our differences in personality! Which do you prefer? (Trick question).
Finally, Jane painted hearts that I outlined on a paper bag.
We filled the bag with hearts and when Hubby came home from a business trip, we gave him a love attack!

[…] Give someone a Heart Attack […]
These are so sweet! I want to do this for my Valentine’s Day craft with my boys! Do you know how long you baked the hearts for? I would assume they wouldn’t take as long as the handprints would have…Great idea!
Hi Jen! I don’t remember exactly how long they took, but definitely shorter than handprints and other salt dough ornaments because I made them quite thin. It was a few hours, though. Good luck with your craft and thanks for stopping by
[…] Okay, it’s actually two. I realize that almost all my posts of 2012 have been heart or kid-related, but well, I’ve been extra sentimental these weeks leading up to my […]
I love the white string hearts! They look nice in the collaborative AHA book!
I thought it was supercool that our cookies and your tofu hearts were right next to each other in the book!
I love the string weaving on the hearts. The looks is really wonderful.
Thanks! I had so much fun doing it with my daughter. Can you tell who’s the uptight one
Those are amazing! I’ve pinned this and can’t wait to do it. I’ve never thought to pair salt dough with a lacing activity! Greatness.
Thanks for the comment and pinning, Joyce
You’re so nice with your comments! Hope you try it and would love to see your version.
I love those ornaments! We made some salt dough last year around V-day, but didn’t make any “jewelry” I LOVE the lacing ones you all made! Hope you have lots of fun with your sensory bin!
Glad you’re going to try one! Kids LOVE them!
Glad I responded to your comment so late so that I’d have this reminder to try a sensory bin
Thanks for your comment and the inspiration!
